Uganda Goats Update
We’ve had a really exciting set of reports from our partners in Soroti, Uganda, letting us know how they have got on in the last year. Some of you will remember that two years ago we ran a campaign before Christmas to give goats to villagers in Northern Uganda. Here are some of the results of our fundraising during 2006 and 2007.
Facilitating the project
To help start the goats project, the church in Soroti set up a Development Board that would then provide the assistance to the village committees. The village committees were also established to enable villagers to benefit from the goats being given out.
In total, 65 animators (people who work with the goats) were trained in 10 villages in rural Uganda. Of those, 22 animators were provided with bicycles (see below) so that they could get from village to village and 15 animators were provided with mobile phones, mostly due to donations of old phones from people in Edinburgh.

300 she goats were purchased and distributed along with 15 ‘improved’ he goats (need we spell it out for you).
The idea is this: goats remain on loan to a family until the first kid comes along. That kid is then given to another needy family and the first family then gets to keep the goat. So far 46 kids have been passed on which means 46 families now have their own goat and they can choose to sell on kids in the future.
In addition to this great progress, 617 families were supported with ‘seed aid’ after the 2007 floods.
There are proposals underway for renewing a carpentry project. More on that soon.
We’d most appreciate funds for development work and then The Africa Fund team can send it according to the greatest need. You can give to the work of the Soroti Development Board and their projects by clicking here or the button below.
